A reality-shattering mystery from Jeff Bakalar!

Holloway Hills. 1999.

At first glance, a quaint, wholesome, countryside town. The suns always shining, the people are always friendly, and the donuts are always served piping hot. It's perfect. Maybe even a little too perfect...

With a missing person's case that no one acknowledges and a mysterious little girl running around who seems to vanish without a trace, it's up to Peace Officer Jake Mason and Park Ranger Sheila Lomas to uncover the truth buried underneath them.

About the project

In many ways, making a good mystery story is like planting a flower garden. You have to carefully til the plot of soil, plant the seeds, and patiently wait for it all to beautifully bloom—or in Jeff Bakalar’s webcomic, What Lies Below the Lilies, case—watch what horrors might emerge from deep beneath the disturbed earth. What Lies Below the Lilies is Jeff's Y2K inspired dream-child, weaving the unsettling calm of a quaint northeastern small town rife with 90s nostalgia and residents that are not so normal as horrific happenings transpire all around them. As lead producer I built and managed the creative team, developing the story with writer Sarah Dealy, giving feedback on art throughout all stages of production alongside artists Nicole Kim and Meighhh, providing guidance on colors by Novi Octavia and letters by Kait Routsis, and partnered with editor and co-producer, Nicole D’Andria to achieve Jeff’s terrifying vision. Without spoiling anymore of the mystery, think Twin Peaks + The Truman Show riddled with eccentric characters and cutting-edge tech conspiracies wrapped in a suspenseful, tragic, yet sometimes heartwarming, webcomic mystery.
